Post caps don’t have to cost you an arm and a leg if you know what you are looking for. That means you need to decide if you want to use a finial to place on top or not. If you are simply looking for a way to protect the post from the elements by capping it off you can do that with cheap post caps made of wood, plastic or metal. Most of these are slip over caps that are easily installed. Just make sure you follow the manufactures recommended instructions in order to get the most out of the cap.

If you want to use inexpensive finials to place on top of the cap, they can be found. Look for simple shapes as they are normally finials that are in stock and don’t have to be made by order. Do be aware that if you purchase the cheapest on the market they are normally made of pressed or treated wood and don’t last as long and some have a lot of flaws. Look to find finials made of cedar as they will last longer if you take care of them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You can decorate your fence and deck without damaging your wallet!
