Having a meal outdoors sounds fun and romantic, but few people seldom realize the effort behind getting a meal cooked. Without electricity, it takes more work to properly prepare food. There are no timers to tell you when you have finished preheating, and there aren’t any alarms that let you know when your food is completely cooked. Why do people still choose to have their meals outside without most of the modern conveniences? Some people prefer an alternative to traditional outdoor grilling while others may be looking to save money on their electricity bill. We are fortunate to have plenty of blueberry bushes in our-neck-of-the-woods, so we never are denied the pleasure of hot, Blueberry Muffins day or night. When blueberry season is over, we just dig into the supply we have filling our freezer. If your family does not have access to blueberry bushes, check out the fresh fruit department in your local grocery store. If you choose the smaller size berries in the store, you’ll get a nice, sweet flavor that’s closer to hand-picked. Usually, the bigger they are the more hybrid they are, which I think lends a less desirable taste. If you aren’t happy with the fresh blueberries in your market, frozen can be just as yummy. We entertain a lot, especially at the holidays. For the special family gatherings I really like to use some of our older, nicer dishes that my grandmother had given me. But they are delicate so they have to be hand-washed. While I try to hand dry them when I can, it’s also nice to be able to have a decent dish rack to dry them on so I can spend more time with company.
